A Thousand Words-Fondue
In the past couple of months we’ve had several pot luck dinner parties featuring sexy slow cooked meats and old school comfort food. When Douglas and Kim of Living Room Events (LRE Catering) brought this pot of happiness over to the house it inspired me to write volumes. One look at the fondue and my imagination went into overdrive of times past. You know, like parties at Grannie’s house, a classic Julia-style recipe, the 70’s and the smell of Aqua Velva and cheap scotch. But it had occured to me in a brilliant flash, that like the old cliche, a picture really is worth a thousand words. So for this post I’d like for all of you to tell me what it invokes in you. Let your imagination rip and please paint some words worthy of this image. I can’t wait to read the stories.
Bon Voyage!

OK, I’m showing my age here, but back when I was in high school, the absolute classiest date was to the fondue restaurant. (Close second: Ye Olde English Steak House.) The shine of the copper pots, the extreme lack of lighting at the tables, the intoxicating smell of – wait, it was Old Spice, not Aqua Velva!… the gleam in his eyes…
Whoops, I think I’ve said too much!

He knew fondue would be just the thing to loosen her up… one dip into the hot cheese and she be putty in his hands.

I’ll have to marinate in my creative writing juices for a bit and get back to you, but as it stands now the photo reminds me a particularly drunken evening at the Matterhorn on Van Ness. Gaggle of girls+extreme amounts of booze+hot cheese = hatred of fellow diners.

I have a Swiss/Italian friend, Fabrizio Dellacorte who lives in Lugano Switzerland and is married to one of my oldest friends. He is a cliche in many ways, and one of the ways is that he LOVES fondue I can remember many a dinner party where Fabri would bring out the copper fondue pot and we would dip dip dip into the gooey hot cheese. I thought it was delicious but couldn’t help thinking… is this dinner?? melted cheese and bread?? And yes, it was, that and a bottle of wine!
